What to look for in these photos

Most contractor galleries are a wall of finished shots taken from the one angle that flatters the job. Finished pictures all look about the same. The parts that decide whether a job lasts are the parts nobody photographs — so here is what we would look at if we were you.

On the roofing photos

Look at where the roof meets a wall, and where it meets a chimney. Those transitions are where roofs leak, and they leak because of flashing, not shingles. New step flashing woven into the courses is right. Fresh caulk smeared over old flashing is a repair with a shelf life.

Look at the ridge. A continuous ridge vent, cut properly and running the length of the ridge, means somebody thought about airflow. Attic ventilation is what determines whether a roof reaches its rated life or fails a decade early, and it is the single most common thing skipped on a cheap bid.

On the deck photos

Look under the deck, at the framing, not at the deck boards. PVC decking from Wolf will look good on day one no matter what is underneath it. What matters is joist spacing, hardware, and how the ledger is attached to the house. Ledger attachment is the failure point in nearly every deck collapse — it has to be bolted through the rim joist with proper flashing above it, never nailed and never left unflashed.

Look at the stairs. Consistent riser height, a solid stringer, and a graspable handrail are code, and they are also the difference between a deck that passes inspection and one that gets torn apart and redone.

On the siding photos

Look at the corners and around the windows. Siding fails at penetrations. Proper J-channel and trim, with the housewrap correctly lapped behind it, keeps water moving down and out. Look for panels that are not fighting each other at the corners and courses that stay level across the whole wall.

Insulated siding like CraneBoard sits flatter than hollow vinyl and hides wall irregularities better. In photos, that shows up as an absence of waves.

Why there are fewer photos here than you might expect

We would rather show you a smaller set of real work than a large set we cannot account for. Every image on this page is a product line we actually install. We are not going to fill this page with stock photography of houses that do not exist, and if you are comparing contractors, it is worth asking whichever ones you are talking to whether they can say the same.
