The utility bill is the least interesting part

Most window sales pitches lead with energy savings. We think that's backwards — not because the savings aren't real, but because they're the smallest part of what bad windows cost you.

What failing windows actually cost

Rooms you stop using

The most common thing we hear on a window appointment isn't about money. It's "we don't really use that room in the winter." A room with drafty windows on two exterior walls becomes storage. You're paying a mortgage on square footage you've quietly given up.

Condensation, and what it leads to

When warm interior air hits cold single-pane glass or a failed seal, it condenses. That water runs down onto the sill and sits there. Over enough winters that means rotted sills, stained drywall, peeling paint, and in the worst cases mold in the wall cavity below the window.

Fog between the panes is the clearest signal there is. It means the seal has failed and the insulating gas between the panes is gone. That unit cannot be repaired. It's now effectively single-pane glass with a decorative spacer.

Noise

Nobody buys windows for noise and almost everybody mentions it afterward. If you're on a busy road, near a school, or backing up to a highway corridor, a modern multi-pane unit with a good seal changes what the house sounds like.

Operation and safety

Windows that are painted shut or won't stay up are an egress problem, not just an annoyance. Bedrooms need windows that open. That's a code issue and a fire-safety one.

What actually makes a modern window perform

The marketing gets noisy here, so plainly:

• Low-E coating — reflects radiant heat. This is the biggest single upgrade over an older unit.
• Gas fill between panes — argon or krypton insulates better than plain air. Krypton performs better in narrower gaps, which is why it shows up in triple-pane units.
• Warm-edge spacers — the strip separating the panes. Older metal spacers conducted cold straight through and were the first thing to fail.
• The install itself — a premium window installed badly will underperform a mid-grade window installed correctly. Every time. This is where corners get cut and where you can't see it.

Is triple-pane worth it in Missouri?

Sometimes. Triple-pane costs more, weighs more, and delivers its clearest benefit on the coldest and noisiest exposures. On a north-facing wall or a room on a busy street, it's a real upgrade. On every window in a sheltered house, you're paying for performance you won't perceive.

We'd rather put a very good double-pane in the whole house and triple-pane where it earns its keep than sell you the most expensive option everywhere.

When we tell people to wait

If your windows are drafty because the trim and caulk failed, that's a few hundred dollars of exterior sealing, not a whole-house project. We'll tell you that. If two windows have failed seals and the other eighteen are fine, replace two.

Whole-house replacement makes sense when most of them are failing at once — which is common, because they all went in the same year and they all age on the same schedule.
